All the new Opera and Opera adjacent work happening in Australia in February

New Opera in Australia went off with a bang thanks to Siegfried & Roy at the Sydney Festival. "In opera (as in magic) anything is possible, and Costi and Di Somma have come up trumps, creating a tragicomic opera that is as camp as it is moving." - Jansson J. Antmann (Limelight) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ We're crossing our fingers that the rest of Australia gets to see this exciting new work.

ADELAIDE

In modern-day Finland, a joyous wedding celebration takes a shocking turn when the darkest secrets are revealed and a young bride faces an impossible decision. Innocence comes to Adelaide Festival for its highly anticipated Australian Premiere following sell-out seasons at Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Finnish National Opera, London’s Royal Opera House, Dutch National Opera and San Francisco Opera, and directly before its New York debut at the Metropolitan Opera.

Evan J. Lawson & Daniel Szesiong Todd

Forest Collective & Midsumma Festival

MELBOURNE

In the haunting corridors beneath Abbotsford Convent, Forest Collective presents a reimagining of their highly successful dance-opera & piano concerto.

Through this immersive theatrical experience, you will descend into the labyrinth of Greek myth, witnessing first-hand the ordeal of Theseus, Ariadne and her half-brother, the Minotaur. Evan J Lawson’s music and Daniel Szesiong Todd’s libretto confront themes of shame, isolation and redemption, while maverick Melbourne pianist Danaë Killian gives powerful voice to the work’s dramatically-embedded piano concerto. Ashley Dougan’s visceral, yet lyrical choreography and the vision of director Cathy Hunt bring a desperate humanity to this epic tale. Topped off with an exceptional cast of singers, dancers and instrumentalists, Daniel Szesiong Todd, Teresa Ingrilli, Girl Whatever, Danaë Killian, Ashley Dougan, Charlie MacArthur, Kim Tan & Alex McDonald.

January 31 - February 8

Abbotsford Convent, 1 St. Heliers Street, Abbotsford

Fluxus has also been working with Queerstories, with writer Teddy Dunn, composer Alex Turley and director Maeve Marsden collaborating with one of Melbourne’s most vibrant vocal ensembles Divisi Chamber with Compose Queer x Queerstories, developing work by emerging queer composers to tell stories in new ways. The fruits of these commissions will be performed by this world-class ensemble in Melbourne.

As Fluxus' artistic director, Ali McGregor leads an all-star cast featuring Antoinette Halloran, Dimity Shepherd, Deborah Cheetham Fraillon, Christopher Tonkin, Michael Smallwood and Imogen Kelly. This evening under the stars will celebrate new Australian works with original casts including Lorelei, Parrwang Lifts the Sky & Seigfried & Roy.

We were really disappointed to hear about the cancellation of ACOco's February festival. Please make sure you continue to buy tickets early to shows to support artists, creators and new works and we wish ACOco the best with their plans for 2025.

As always, please get in touch about any recitals, productions, developments, or performances we should know. We will include them in future blog posts and on our Instagram. Next year, we will continue highlighting new Australian work in a quarterly blog post starting in March.

This blog is in no way sponsored by any of the companies mentioned* and is created by FLUXUS to celebrate contemporary Australian Opera.
